What our children are busy doing
  • Pencils, crayons, charcoal, chalk, requiring motor skills necessary to transfer ideas on to paper as “scribble”, drawings, or letters and words.  When children are ready, they are taught to form letters and sound them phonetically.
  • Literature and language rich environment to extend children's thinking beyond the 'here and now'.
  • Practical and imaginative work with paint, scissors, glue, clay and scrap materials.
  • Festive cooking and bread making.
  • Encouragement of analytical and problem solving skills with construction toys, jigsaws, sorting and threading, box-modelling and wood-work.
  • Constant access to colourful and interesting books with adult time available to read and extend the skills and experience of the world.
  • Cultural awareness and appreciation of the natural world; observations of seasons, weather, animals and plants.
  • Imaginative and co-operative play in the “Home Corner" where social and communication skills are very important.
  • Large garden where the children can run freely, watch their own plants growing, ride bikes and scooters, use climbing frames, learn traditional playground games.
  • Learning about number in both play and more formal situations.
  • Learning the rudiments of rhythm, simple notations, pitch and volume through songs rhymes and musical instruments.
  • Introduction to Spanish; yoga for calmness and focus; weekly art projects with our resident artist.

Introduction

We provide a gentle and caring environment for the pre-school child who is ready to make the transition from the one-to-one relationship of home to the more socially demanding nursery setting, in preparation for transition to the infant classroom.

Our school

Children can attend for a variable number of sessions per week in a maximum class of 18 with a staff ratio of at least one adult to six children. The staff here are all qualified and are led by a graduate leader in early years. They all have many years of child care experience.

Our school year totals 36 weeks divided into three terms. We open for a full day session from 09-00 to15-30 with the option to attend mornings (09-00 to 12-15) or afternoons (12-45 to 15-30) only for our very youngest children. Please enquire regarding drop offs and pick ups at other times.

Children settle very easily into the nursery school day and we encourage you to support that confidence but sometimes it takes time and we value your help and presence in the early stages. While each session has a familiar routine, we encourage children to become self-motivated and independent in their learning within a carefully prepared environment.

Your child will have the opportunity to pursue a range of activities to make learning fun and our curriculum is based on a varied and stimulating selection of well-ordered play situations. Our low child-to-teacher ratio ensures that your child gets the attention he or she deserves.
